A DESCRIPTION OF KONKANI

This is a linguistic grammar that describes the phonology, morphology and syntax of Konkani, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the State of Goa and its surrounding districts. The writer is a native speaker of Konkani. A Description of Konkani was originally written as a doctoral dissertation submitted to Georgetown University, Washington DC and was defended with distinction in April 1985. The present book of the same name is a revised version of the dissertation. pp xii + 338. The model followed in describing the phonology, morphology is a very broad structuralist one. Generative principles and techniques, however, are used wherever they are found necessary. In the syntax, because of its relative simplicity the early transformational generative model has been utilized; phrase-structure rules are used to arrive at the underlying structures; transformational rules are proposed to account for the derived sentences of Konkani, which include the surface structures of conjoined, complex, interrogative, and negative sentences.
